Bethel Park High School

During the week we had students sign red ribbons at lunchtime to place on the sign which we constructed and placed in the middle of the high school campus.  At the beginning of the week there were 149 red crosses in the ground in front of the sign.  Each day, a new drug message was put on the board, and crosses were taken away, showing the decrease of the usage of marijuana, alcohol, smoking, and other illegal drugs.  They are as follows:

1. Illicit drug use by 10th graders dropped by 25% in the last decade.

2. Marijuana had the 5th consecutive year of decreased usage among 10th and 12th graders.

3. Alcohol use has declined by more than 33% since its peak in1996.

4. Daily smoking rates have declined substantially in the last decade for 8th, 10th and 12th graders.

Independence 7-8 Middle School

We kicked off Red Ribbon Week by assisting their school with their movie night.  The Bethel Park PRIDE team did a short mini-performance before the movie started.  We also assisted with passing out free popcorn and water and selling baked goods at the intermission.  On the following Monday and Tuesday, several members went up to Independence Middle School (IMS) in the morning and had kids sign red ribbons.  These ribbons were then hung up around the cafeteria.  The PRIDE kids also decorated bulletin boards around the school.

 Neil Armstrong 5-6 Middle School

At Neil Armstrong Middle School (NAMS), we helped with their "NAMS JAMS".  "NAMS JAMS" is a bi-monthly activity for Neil Armstrong that is fun for everyone.  This "NAMS JAMS" had a Halloween theme.  There was a costume contest, pumpkin painting, and "GHOST" bingo.  The gym was also open for recreational fun.  The PRIDE team sold refreshments to the ghosts and goblins of Neil Armstrong.  The team also gave out a quiz to the students about drug facts.  The winner received a $10 gift card to      Wal-Mart.

Bethel Park Elementary Schools

We conducted a poster contest at each of the 5 elementary schools.  The students had to make a poster that included a drug fact and was creative.  We chose a winner from the 3rd and 4th grade from each school.  The guidelines for the contest are in the following page: Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest

Hayride

To celebrate a full week of hard work, the PRIDE team went to The Spring House in Eighty Four, PA.  We enjoyed a fun time with a hayride, smores, and hot dogs.  We also had apple cider and hot chocolate.
